Ellwood Engineered Castings, Hubbard, Ohio, poured a 180 ton iron casting on Jan. 27, eclipsing previous efforts that have produced some of the largest iron castings made in North America.
The ASTM A 48 Class 20 iron ingot mold casting’s pour weight of 180 tons resulted in a 160-ton as-cast finished weight. Four ladles were used to pour the mold in 16.6 minutes. The mold measured 130 x 145 in.
Ellwood Engineered Castings, primarily an ingot mold supplier, also produces gray and ductile iron engineered castings for the power generation, mining equipment, auto/plastic dies, machine tools, fluid transfer, heavy construction and wind energy industries.
To accommodate its large-size castings, Ellwood maintains a 50,000-sq.-ft. melt shop with three 55-ton coreless induction furnaces capable of melting 900 tons of iron per day. The 140,000 sq.-ft. facility is capable of casting more than 12,000 tons per month in castings ranging from 3,000 to 360,000 lbs.
