Hyundai Starts Production of New Engines With CGI Blocks Print E-mail

Released September 5, 2007

SinterCast, Stockholm, Sweden, will provide the technology to cast the cylinder blocks for two new commercial vehicle engines by Hyundai Motor Co.

Hyundai recently began series production of the 3.9- and 5.9-L engines at its facility in Jeonju, Korea, which will be produced with compacted graphite iron (CGI). While Hyundai will cast the products in-house, it has solicited the services of SinterCast to offer CGI expertise.

“The start of the production of [these engines] complements the existing 3-L V-6 CGI cylinder block production that SinterCast has supported since mid-2006,” said Steve Dawson, president and CEO of SinterCast. “The Hyundai engines become the eighth and ninth SinterCast CGI commercial vehicle components to be announced for the start of series production during the second half of 2007. The volume of the engines increases the announced SinterCast CGI volume in the commercial vehicle sector from 500,000 to 700,000 engine equivalents per year.”

Following the start of metalcasting production in September, the new engines will be available in Hyundai’s small and medium-sized commercial vehicles before the end of 2007.
