2011 Castings of the Year

The 2011 Casting of the Year award was presented to two companies:

  • Lethbridge Iron Works Co. Ltd., Lethbridge, Canada, for its front cab support bracket for heavy truck and
  • Eck Industries, Manitowoc, Wis., for its hybrid bus stator housing.

ImageLethbridge's ductile iron front cab support bracket represents a consolidation of three castings, seven welded assemblies and 16 low-level parts into two castings, zero welded assemblies and four low-level parts. The new component is 7 lbs. lighter than its 42-lb. predecessor.

Eck's aluminum hybrid bus stator housing was produced using a complex core assembly and several cast-in inserts, including a cast-iron center hub, a steel tube and eight cast iron support lugs.

Metalcaster of the Year

Image MODERN CASTING has selected Caterpillar's Mapleton, Ill., facility as this year's Metalcaster of the Year for innovatively re-engineering two of its molding lines in order to become more flexible without making an overwhelming capital overlay.

Past winners include U.S. Pipe's Marvel City Mini Mill, Birmingham, Ala., Signicast, Hartford, Wis., Intermet's Stevensville Mich., facility, Blackhawk de Mexico, Santa Catarina, Mexico, General Motors' Saginaw Metal Casting Operations, Saginaw, Mich., and Dotson Iron Castings, Mankato, Minn.
